American composer and bandleader. Started late in the big band era, forming his group in Chicago in 1946. Recording contracts were with Decca, Brunswick, Mercury, MGM. London and Liberty. Phillips's theme song was "Thankful" and his compositions included "Wishin'", "Camel Hump" and "Open House".
